Noynoy Aquino, No Philippine “Messiah”

For the nth time, a new president of this country is set to try to fulfill whatever good promise he made during the election’s campaign period.

In about five week’s time, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino will be assuming the presidency, succeeding President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who sat in power for nine years–turning over a government that has been mocked and hailed as utterly corrupt by almost all sectors of the society due to the many scandals that went with it.

F. Sionil Jose, one of the respected literary artists the nation has ever seen, wrote an Open Letter to Noynoy in his weekend column of today’s issue of the Philippine Star.

You can read a full-length of his column on this link.

But here’s Jose’s parting shot on his open letter: “Before I go, please let me see this unhappy country begin to be a much better place than the garbage dump our leaders and people have made it. You can be this long awaited messiah but only if you are brave enough and wise enough to redeem your father’s aborted promise.

Certainly, a tough job lies ahead for president-elect Noynoy. Government corruption, high-rate of unemployment, crime rate still up, agricultural lands affected/ some devastated by the worsening drought, among others.

But the job of solving all these problems can’t be accomplished by one man alone. Even if Noynoy Aquino is the most powerful Filipino starting June 30, when he takes his oath of office, he won’t be able to fulfill his mandate apart from the cooperation and unified response of every Filipino.

As a Filipino, I hope and pray that all of us who love our nation, would rally behind Noynoy Aquino and his incoming administration. That each of the 85 million Filipinos would do his/her part in contributing to building a better Philippines.

To borrow from ABS-CBN’s pre-election power line: AKO MISMO! TAYO MISMO!
